The Good News: February, 2016

I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS AND THIS HAS BEEN A LONG TIME COMING.

The lowdown:

Ok, so I have always been all for being positive and optimistic
(read about my take on The Importance of Positivity ☺️).
A long time back, I had the idea of doing a blogpost series called 'The Good News'.

The news and current affairs of our world is so important, it is crucial we keep updated on what is happening around us.

BUT...
A lot of that tends to focus on what is going wrong.

And, although it is necessary to think about what is wrong in order to right it,
I think we could stand to gain a lot from appreciating what is already right, or getting good, as well!

And, so without too much more rambling on (I need to learn to shush up! :P), I begin my new monthly series of...

THE GOOD NEWS!

Nurse brings snow and smiles inside for sick kids

Lucy, 7, a patient at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Centre, watched the snow fall. Being a massive 'Frozen' fan, the doctors thought she could go outside for a bit.
However, due to the condition of the weather and her fragile health condition (from a bone marrow transplant six weeks ago) the outside trip was cancelled.

Nurse Alex Classen, 26, brainstormed and realised if the kids couldn't go outside, she could bring the snow inside to them! Braving a blizzard several times she scooped up lots of snow for Lucy and the other kids.

“We have a bunch of patients who are really sick and can’t necessarily go out and play in the snow like normal kids.”

“So I thought it would be fun for them to be able to touch and play and experience the snow."

“Anything I can do to make these kids smile is awesome...So whenever they’re happy, it just makes my day.”

Students awaiting test scores got an important and inspiring letter

I have nothing to add to this, except for - HOW AMAZING. So much admiration for the staff who came up with this idea and the school for making this happen!

  1. I wish we had those kind of letters at our schools. It would make taking the exams so much more less excruciating, ha. Thank you for this series, Raashi; it's incredible. In the world where only bad news are reported, it's important that we get reminded of the millions of good things going on, too! x

    1. How amazing of an idea for the staff at that school to have! I feel as if too often our generation is taught that our worth lies in our ability to be the best in one, or every, thing - whether it be academia, physical appearance, you name it.

Aww, thank you so much for saying that, May. I am so, so glad you like the idea behind it!

  2. I love this post, this is probably the best idea for a series I've ever seen. The letter is so inspiring, I wish the teachers at our school would have had that attitude - in the end it's just a mark and and it's not the end of the world if we don't reach it. Things that seem really bad at first can sometimes turn out to be for the better. I also love that the boy has given every single girl at his school a rose, that's so adorable. xx

    1. Thank you so much, Mira, that means more to me than you know. I completely agree with you, with so much in our lives we are taught that either we reach a certain level and if we don't, we're automatic "failures", all or nothing. I too am a big believer in things always happening for a reason :)

Yes, what an amazing gesture from that boy! Would have made so many girls smile and that's such a gorgeous thing! :)

  3. We need more news like this! Thoroughly enjoyed reading this & I love, love, LOVE that you started this blog series. I remember thinking a while back that we need more uplifting stories, that we need to remind ourselves of all the good that's happening in the world. It's wonderful that you've rounded them all up here. Love how ordinary people can have the power to really make an impact. Sometimes we just feel as though we, as one individual, just don't have the power, but the truth is, we all do. Being a Valentine's baby, I also particularly loved how Hayden made everyone feel included on Valentine's! Such a lovely gesture.
Keep spreading your positivity Raashi :)

    1. Ana! Thank you SO much. I have to agree with you, when I was rounding up stories I was so surprised at how some of the sweetest stories were achieved by ordinary people. Hehe, I hope you had the best Valentine's birthday and you were spoiled by your loved ones! Hayden's gesture for all the girls at his school was so lovely! Thank you again for reading <3

  6. Ohmygoddd, such a great idea for a blog series! It's great having something positive to read about when there's so many bad news going around in the world! The letter idea at the school - how sweet and caring of the staff! Only wish it happened at all schools as I hear so many kids who get disappointed by their results at the end of the year and feel super sad about it as opposed to feeling happy about their graduation! Again, great post! Can't wait to tune in for the next good news post (and your other posts too hehe) x

  10. Oh Raashi! This is why I adore you! This is such an incredible idea and I can't wait to read about it! There is so much negativity in the press and it's easy to why it's the only thing we focus on. We could all do with being a bit more positive about life. Every one of these stories are brilliant and I thank you for finding them and allowing me some joy to experience today! Good on you Raashi! You are simply brilliant.

  12. More of this please!!! This post was so heartwarming! Thank you for all of these lovely stories, each and everyone was so touching. I am so happy that Zimbabwe has banned child marriage and that nurse who brought in snow to a sick child patient is such a lovely human being.
