My Time of Others Story

I do love writing, but I definitely don't think I'm the most talented at it by any means.
I love blogging because I get to be a bit more casual with it, it feels like I'm talking to my friends, because you guys kind of are my friends!

But I do love doing more serious pieces from time to time, especially when they are on something I find to be very meaningful.

Some of you might have seen this on my Instagram:

I am happy to say I got accepted for a Magazine internship recently ☺️
And so far it has been a great experience!
I've said countless times that I entered into this year with very clear ideas about what I wanted from myself (read here and here), so I'm glad I'm getting to do those things - slowly, but surely ☺️

Anyways, I recently got to do a piece on a local (and international) art exhibition which had a lot of meaning behind it. Today, I want to share just a little part of the story I wrote about it with you guys, just because I feel like in today's world, its message is so relevant.

After travelling through the art museums of Tokyo, Osaka and Singapore, the ever-evolving Time of Others exhibition has now opened at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA).Deriving from the Japanese idiom tanin no jikan, its title signifies courtesy and respect of another person’s time. Through exploring the dual concepts of ‘time’ and ‘difference’, and searching and surveying the cultures, histories and people existing in this diverse region, Time of Others has successfully created a platform from which to reflect on Asia-Pacific relations.Functioning as a meeting point instead of a melting pot, the multiple perspectives of Asia-Pacific are revealed, with their distinct opportunities, agendas and internal contradictions being showcased. Time of Others not only transforms our personal perceptions of ‘others’ into an ability and willingness to understand them, but also focuses on how impressions of difference and otherness are even constructed, conserved or challenged in contemporary societies. Time of Others transcends the borders of several Asia-Pacific regions symbolically and literally, revealing that otherness is not a force of division, but rather a source of renewal, a source through which we can develop a genuine understanding of differences and dimensions.

When is a time that you understood the experience of 'others'? ☺️
New post will be up next Wednesday!

  1. Raa, a huge congratulations on the internship and piece. I absolutely love the line, "revealing that otherness is not a force of division, but rather a source of renewal, a source through which we can develop a genuine understanding of differences and dimensions."

You have your way with words, Raa, and I'm looking forward to more writing pieces from you!

  7. Congrats on your magazine internship, that's amazing! And you're definitely very talented at writing, just this little piece was beautiful - I love this approach to 'otherness' it is true that instead of it creating divisions it should be a source for tolerance and understanding. I experienced that when I was working at a hostel - we are different, all unique and yet all human with the same needs. Otherness is beautiful xx

  8. This is SO great Raashi! I'm so happy and proud of you! Congratulations for the internship firstly. I didn't doubt your writing would be featured and recognized so this doesn't come as a surprise because I can already see such an inquisitive, yet thoughtful journalist within you. But reading this also make me so happy to know you've gotten a wonderful new opportunity to expand, grow and learn from. Enjoy every minute of these new adventures and find things to marvel at always!

I love your writing here: 'transforms our personal perceptions of ‘others’ into an ability and willingness to understand them, but also focuses on how impressions of difference and otherness are even constructed, conserved or challenged in contemporary societies.'

and also your last bit about transcending division. This, I love and so agree with on a deeper level. I think for me, a time when I understood a 'time for others' was when I experienced my first Iftar event a few years ago. As a non-muslim at her first Iftar event during Ramadan, I had no idea what to expect but the absolute beauty of the event shook me to my core because I realised yet again, we are all ONE. We go beyond all barriers we try to place upon ourselves and the people around us. I was so moved that I had to write about it. Your writing here resonates with me on this :)

Much love and all the best!! Ana xx

    1. Ana, you are honestly just one of the best people! ♥ It is so beyond lovely to hear comments like that from you when I admire your style so much. I have literally just written "Find things to marvel at always" on a sticky note and popped it on my desk - I adore that.

Oh my goodness, thank you for sharing such a beautiful moment with me, when you understood a 'time of others'. I especially love when religious boundaries and barriers are moved beyond, I have always loved the quote that our race should be humanity and our religion should be love. I love when people can experience other people's religions freely. Again, thank you for sharing that, it's beautiful.
