A Mini Resort Getaway!

Oh, I'm failing so hard at blogging right now.

And I'm pretty sure you guys will understand this: You know when you're completely lagging behind on something, it feels so far gone, and you almost don't want to do it?
It feels overwhelming to even start.
This is me right now, haha.
I am so sorry I have been horrible at reading, commenting, replying back.
I don't think I have ever been as busy as I am right now.
Recently a friend sent me a Buzzfeed article saying read 2 and 10.

Yeahhh, sounds about right. And unfortunately, as you can tell, blogging has slipped to the bottom of urgency :/
Anyways, enough excuses, I'm hoping once these next two weeks pass things will ease up ever so slightly for me.

I started working on July's Good News (cause we really need it given some of the events of the past month) and remembered that I really do love blogging!

So until life settles down a bit, I still want to be posting content and will be trying to get around to catching up on blogs soon!

---

Before everything got extra crazy, I managed to squeeze in a little weekend getaway with my mum for her birthday and it was so lovely!

During the weekend we were talking and we realised it's been forever since we have gone on an actual rest and relax sort of holiday, so we definitely made full use of it! I had organised spa treatments for us, we ate some good food, we went on a rainforest walk, went to a gorgeous viewing point overlooking a lake, lounged by the poolside, went to the beach for sunset (and sunrise! Ohhh, that wakeup... :P), did yoga outdoors and finished off the weekend the way I wish everyday could be started - a good ol' breakfast buffet :P

When was the last time you guys had a proper relax?
See you Wednesday with some Good News!

General Lessons: Goal Setting and Giving Back

You guys.
Life has been busy (as you can tell because this post is two days late :P)
Haha, but life is showing no sign of slowing down right now.
BUT, tomorrow morning I don't start work till a little later ☺️
So, my plan is to wake up, sit down with some green tea and my laptop - and catch up!
(Ahhh, it already sounds so good.)

I have been going full speed ahead this year and because of it, I got chosen for a really cool opportunity!
Yesterday I attended a Women in Media event and got to talk to some of the most influential women in my local media landscape.

When talking to the mentors there were two things that really stuck out to me, and I wanted to share them with you.

[When talking about one of the mentees]:
"One of the key things her and I did in the beginning was just to do goal setting, and I think often so many people don't do that,  or they have really lofty goals and aspirations and maybe not those medium term goals or those short term goals. And so I think it's really important to have all of those set out, or at least have an idea of where you want to go and how you want to go about doing it. And then each day is how do you go about doing it."Karina Carvahlo

[When talking about why it's important to give back]:
"You go through certain things as a journalist and you get to a point in your career, and sometimes you don't realise how much you've learnt and what those lessons might mean to someone else."
- Kylie Lang

Goal setting and giving back, sounds simple enough right?
Both super important and both can seem overwhelming at times.
But if we truly think about it, we can do both those things on a small or large scale.

Whether your long term goal is to have a productive week (and has lots of little goals in between).
Or whether your long term goal is to end up with a specific job in a specific country (and has loooooots of little goals in between) :P.

Whether giving back will just be giving your thoughts and advice to someone you know personally who is doing a lot, or struggling with things, or just someone you relate to.
Or whether your version of giving back is throwing yourself into a professional program in your areas of expertise.

Who knows!?!
The options are limitless!

Goal Setting
and
Giving Back.

Two lessons from two women in media.

Until next time!

(Trevi) Fendi Fountain

Fendi has UPPED the fashion show game.
In a way that has never been done before.

Last week on July 7, Haute Couture fashion label Fendi (led by Karl Lagerfeld) decided to stage their latest show at...

Wait for it.

THE TREVI FOUNTAIN.

IN ROME.

IN ITALY.

You know.
Just casually.

As first I thought they did it for the insane levels of prettiness and to showcase their brilliant creativity, but I quickly realised it was to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the acclaimed Italian fashion house.

How exactly did they pull of this collaboration with one of the most iconic landmarks in the world? Fendi was very smart (lots of forward-thinking involved, I'm sure) and had donated money to the Trevi Fountain's renovation project last year.
Touchรฉ Fenditouchรฉ.

What is intriguing is that last year Bulgari chipped in on renovations for the Spanish Steps…interesting.
Models walking up and down 135 steps? Hmmm, we'll see.

The models looked like goddesses, literally figuratively gliding across the water.
I want to say literally not figuratively, because that glass runway they created inside the fountain and on top of water did a verrrrry good job of bringing the illusion to life.

As intricate, detailed and complex the setting became, the designs still took centre stage - and were only elevated by the beautiful blue water and sculptured backgrounds.

Does STUNNING sum it up?

Fashion, history, architecture? YES PLEASE.

Even Blair Waldorf agrees.

For a "Legends and Fairytales" themed night and collection, the show sure nailed the brief.
Well done, Karl Lagerfeld, we bow down to you.  ๐Ÿ˜

I'll just leave some more eye candy here.

Reflections with Raa...

I have always loved fashion.

And one thing I really love is listening to why and how supporting elements were chosen (whether that be in regards to fashion, an artwork, TV show, movie, book etc.).

I love how much thought goes into the tiniest of details.

If any of your favourite TV shows have behind-the scenes/production featurettes/director's commentary, I'm sure they would explain in depth every single thought that went into creating a character's bedroom, for example.

I love watching and listening to those tidbits because it can highlight how something we see as just a randomly occurring setting, contributes in more ways than we consciously recognise in the grand scheme of things (character development, the feel of the environment, feedback into the dialogue and so on!).

So,

needless to say,
I am such a massive fan of the concepts and creativity that culminated in this majestic and magical fashion show.

Until next time!

My Time of Others Story

I do love writing, but I definitely don't think I'm the most talented at it by any means.
I love blogging because I get to be a bit more casual with it, it feels like I'm talking to my friends, because you guys kind of are my friends!

But I do love doing more serious pieces from time to time, especially when they are on something I find to be very meaningful.

Some of you might have seen this on my Instagram:

I am happy to say I got accepted for a Magazine internship recently ☺️
And so far it has been a great experience!
I've said countless times that I entered into this year with very clear ideas about what I wanted from myself (read here and here), so I'm glad I'm getting to do those things - slowly, but surely ☺️

Anyways, I recently got to do a piece on a local (and international) art exhibition which had a lot of meaning behind it. Today, I want to share just a little part of the story I wrote about it with you guys, just because I feel like in today's world, its message is so relevant.

After travelling through the art museums of Tokyo, Osaka and Singapore, the ever-evolving Time of Others exhibition has now opened at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA).Deriving from the Japanese idiom tanin no jikan, its title signifies courtesy and respect of another person’s time. Through exploring the dual concepts of ‘time’ and ‘difference’, and searching and surveying the cultures, histories and people existing in this diverse region, Time of Others has successfully created a platform from which to reflect on Asia-Pacific relations.Functioning as a meeting point instead of a melting pot, the multiple perspectives of Asia-Pacific are revealed, with their distinct opportunities, agendas and internal contradictions being showcased. Time of Others not only transforms our personal perceptions of ‘others’ into an ability and willingness to understand them, but also focuses on how impressions of difference and otherness are even constructed, conserved or challenged in contemporary societies. Time of Others transcends the borders of several Asia-Pacific regions symbolically and literally, revealing that otherness is not a force of division, but rather a source of renewal, a source through which we can develop a genuine understanding of differences and dimensions.

When is a time that you understood the experience of 'others'? ☺️
New post will be up next Wednesday!

The Good News: June, 2016

Finally, back into blogging! :D
I am sooo looking forward to catching up on a mountain of blogposts over the next few days,
and then working on some of my own!
And, no better way to get back into the blog than with some Good News!

The lowdown:

I have always been all for being positive and optimistic
(read about my take on The Importance of Positivity ☺️).
A long time back, I had the idea of doing a blogpost series called 'The Good News'.

The news and current affairs of our world is so important, it is crucial we keep updated on what is happening around us.

BUT...
A lot of that tends to focus on what is going wrong.

And, although it is necessary to think about what is wrong in order to right it,
I think we could stand to gain a lot from appreciating what is already right, or getting good, as well!

So, without further ado,

THE GOOD NEWS!

June, 2016

Help with breakfast and breastfeeding

I saw this 1st day of June and knew STRAIGHT AWAY that I wanted to put this in here. I don't have anything to add, acts of kindness are the best.

18 year old student draws a portrait for each member of the graduating class.

Phillip Sossou, a graduating Boston Latin High School senior, secretly drew every single person in his senior class over the past few months. 411 portraits, all created by Phillip. Phillip admitted that he used Facebook and the odd phone snapshot to serve as inspiration for the portraits. After posting them all over the school's hallways on the last day of class, to say his classmates were shocked would be an understatement. Soussou spoke to the Boston Globe about how "[their] class [had] been kind of divided" and "having these pictures helps us to embrace our diversity."

A journey of a balloon, leading to friendship

Nursing home residents in Wisconsin decided to release a balloon, along with notes they wrote for a soon-to-be fortunate recipient. A little while later, and about 237 miles away, the package arrived at the home of the Fowler family in Lake Michigan - and they were incredibly eager to send a reply to the residents. The balloon release initiative was part of National Nursing home week and "show[ed] that a nursing home can have fun and still live too just as anybody else", said Activity Director, Nancy Duerr. The Fowlers sent back a care package filled with Michigan treats and a message, and so began the bond of some unlikely pen pals.

Two months spent writing 130 personal notes to students, all in the name of suicide awareness

Teacher Brittni Darras, 25, was changed when she found out one of her students attempted suicide. After writing a letter to that girl (read the post above) she composed 130 letters - to each of her students.

Not generic, stock standard letters, but personal letters about their great qualities and things they have achieved - why they are a valuable individual.

This act prompted endless hugs and smiles on the last day of school before vacation.
Darras told TODAY"(The girl's suicide attempt) made me realize she felt like she was not important and didn't make a difference in this world… For these other kids, it's very hard for us to know who is struggling with thoughts of depression or suicide. If she had that response and I couldn't see her as having struggles, the only thing I could think to do was to write every single one of them a unique card."

Student Rachael Redmond received a note mentioning her achievements in the basketball team and a great memoir she had written.

Redmond told TODAY"I think that's why it meant so much to all of us…It wasn't just a, 'Hey, have a good summer,' it was a specific memory or something that we said. It made us feel really important. Some kids got cards about stuff that happened they thought nobody remembered, and it made them really happy. Kids think (suicide) is something that happens only in movies or online, but when it happened locally everyone took a step back because it hit home…Sometimes you go through high school and you feel like your teachers don't really care, but she went out of her way to let us know she does."

A church built by Muslim farmers by their Christian neighbours

Via

Unlike other Pakistani villages, there is no segregation in this region, Christians live side by side with their Muslim neighbours. In a place where religious minorities are often attacked, by building this church they are showing they are united as a community.

"This church being built in a small village by the Muslims, it is very significant. It shows that people have love in their hearts, they want to stay together, if they are those that fuel the fire, there are also those to douse the flames."

A fun weekly garbage pick up

Guys, these three triplets wait for the garbagemen every single week, and not only that - they are ready with snacks and gatorade to give to them! The workers always stop to say hi, have a chat and give a hug to these kiddos. Their mum has posted about this special relationship for a while now, saying it's her way of sharing love and kindness in the world ❤️

...

And that was some of The Good News for June! ☺️

What were you surprised to hear about? Do you have a favourite?
Do you like listening to some Good News? ☺️
